Mastering the Algorithm: Why Blocking Doesn't Work
Ever feel like your feeds on all platforms have a mind of their own, and not a very good one? We’ve all been there, scrolling through content that feels irrelevant, annoying, or just plain repetitive. There’s a common myth floating around that if you block the “right” accounts (like the big corporate ones), you can magically reset your privacy and your feed.
The truth? It doesn’t work that way. This week, I want to chat about why your algorithm is actually a mirror of your habits and, more importantly, how you can “train” it to show you exactly what you want to see in just a couple of days.
The Blocking Myth
Many users believe that blocking major corporate accounts, like Oracle after their TikTok acquisition, will shield their data or refresh their content. In reality, blocking is a defensive move that doesn’t change the underlying math of what the platform thinks you like. If you want a better experience, you have to stop playing defense and start playing offense.
You Are What You Interact With
Your algorithm isn’t a mystery; it’s a reflection. Whether you’re on TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook, the system is designed to feed you more of what you spend time on. If you’re unhappy with your feed, it’s a sign that your past searches and interactions aren’t aligned with your current interests.
The 10-Post Search Strategy
To fix your feed, you need to “force-feed” the algorithm new data. Pick three topics you actually care about (like productivity tips, tech hacks, or travel). Search for them specifically, like and comment on at least 10 posts, and repeat this twice a day. By the end of the week, the “junk” will be pushed out by the content you actually enjoy.
If the algorithm is making you unhappy, don’t just complain, reprogram it. You have more power over that “For You” page than you think.
