Who are you actually talking to?

Do You Know Who You're Marketing To?

There’s a question every entrepreneur needs to ask themselves before they create a single piece of content, run an ad, or record a video, and most people skip right over it.

Who exactly are you marketing to, and where are they hanging out?

I’ll be honest, this one came back to me in a big way recently. Now that the weather is finally getting tolerable, I’ve been back out for my morning walks and with those walks come the audiobooks. I went back to basics and read Russell Brunson’s Dotcom Secrets again. Sometimes you have to revisit the fundamentals, and this one always delivers no matter how many times I read it.

Know Your Dream Customer

Before you write a caption, shoot a reel, or send an email, you need to know exactly who you’re talking to. What does your dream customer care about? What problem keeps them up at night? How can you solve it?

These aren’t just nice-to-have answers. They’re the foundation everything else is built on.

Find Out Where They Actually Are

Back in the day, if you wanted to reach a niche audience, say, a group of high school kids playing The Star Wars Customizable Card Game like I did back in the cafeteria, you had to physically show up or hope they came to your store. You couldn’t just reach them because well, I’m old and we didn’t have internet back then. Today? Your audience is searchable.

Facebook groups. LinkedIn communities. Keywords. Your dream customer is out there right now, and it’s never been easier to find them. Use that.

Structure Your Content With the Hook, Story, Offer Method

Once you know who you’re talking to and where they are, the next step is crafting content that actually connects. Here’s the simple framework:

  • Hook: Grab their attention immediately. What problem are you solving?
  • Story: Show them you understand their situation. Build trust by sharing how you’ve solved that problem before.
  • Offer: Give them a clear next step but don’t pitch every single time. Save the hard call to action for the right moments.

A good rule of thumb? Follow the 80/20 rule, 80% value, 20% pitch. Personally, I lean closer to 90/10. Give more than you ask for, and your audience will stick around.

What about you, do you know exactly who your dream customer is? I’d love to hear how you’re thinking about your audience right now. Hit me up and let me know.
