Why building a "skill" beats writing the same prompt every week
Let’s talk about AI. Yes, AI. Every time you open a blank prompt and explain your brand voice, your formatting, and your system all over again, you’re wasting time you don’t get back.
I use AI as a tool. Not a replacement. It doesn’t do the work for me, it gives me a rough draft to react to.
You're using AI wrong if you're starting from scratch every time
That distinction matters. The moment you expect AI to think for you, you get a generic output. The moment you treat it like a fast first draft, you get something worth editing.
The more I refined my system in Notion, the more I leaned on Claude to help with the copy. I’d give it a prompt, let it spit out a rough draft, then edit from there.
A skill remembers what a prompt forgets
A skill is different from a regular prompt. You build it once, and it holds your brand voice, your formatting, your content system, baked in.
You can even feed it reference material. Your top 10 performing newsletters. Your best-performing videos. It studies the patterns in what already works and applies them going forward.
Once I built mine, it started producing content that dropped straight into my Notion LifeHQ planning hub. That one skill saves me a couple of hours a day, just on that task alone.
Four parts, and one rule you can't skip
Every skill needs four things. A trigger rule, so it knows when it’s being used. Your brand voice and task rules. An output format, whether that’s a video script, a newsletter, or something else. And reference material to sharpen the result.
Once it’s built, run it on a real task. Don’t just admire it, use it. See what comes back and mark what’s off. Wrong tone. Bad formatting. A rule it ignored.
Write that down, then fix it inside the skill.md file itself. That’s the part people skip. Fix it there instead of retyping instructions every time, and the skill remembers the correction permanently.
One more thing. Don’t overload a single skill. If you’re creating for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, that’s one skill. Your newsletter is a separate one. Your YouTube script is another. Keep each one focused on a single task.
