Every time someone tells me they want to start a YouTube channel, the next sentence is always the same. They don’t have enough time.
Between finding the hook, writing the script, filming, and editing, on top of a 9 to 5, it feels impossible. I get it. But I run a channel with one long form video and seven shorts every single week. And it costs me about 8 hours. Let me show you exactly where those hours go.
Ideas cost you nothing
Step one is the idea phase, and this is the part that takes zero extra time. It should already be running in the background of your life.
Every time you scroll YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram and something sparks an idea, capture it immediately. Drop it into your second brain, your notes app, wherever you keep things.
I built my entire idea capture system in Notion, tied into a full content creation workflow that walks from idea straight through to editing. If you want to see how it works, CLICK HERE.
The hour-by-hour breakdown
Here’s how I split 8 hours a week. Title, hook, and thumbnail get 2 hours. These matter more than people think, because your thumbnail and headline decide whether anyone clicks at all.
Writing the script gets 1 hour. I use the Hook Story Offer method. The hook tells your audience what problem you’re solving. The story is the body, broken into three parts, what Russell Brunson calls three secrets. Then a call to action, which can be as simple as follow, subscribe, or comment.
Filming takes about 1 hour once your setup is ready. Editing takes the biggest chunk, 3 hours, and that’s where most beginners freeze up. Start rough. Add text once you’re comfortable. Add transitions and effects after that.
Publishing takes almost no time. YouTube Studio tells you the best times to post, and you just schedule it.
Cut that time in half with the right tool
Add it up, and that’s 7 hours, with one hour left over. But there’s a way to cut this whole process down further.
I use a tool called vidIQ. You type in your idea, and it generates thumbnail options, hook suggestions, and title scores based on YouTube analytics. It won’t touch the filming or editing, that’s still the bulk of your time, but it strips real hours out of the planning phase.
