Why I almost worked on my girlfriend’s birthday (and what stopped me)

The Importance of Communication in Business and Relationships

Hello from Hamilton! Well technically Windsor as I write this and schedule it out, but as you’re reading this, I’m currently on vacation.

As an entrepreneur I used to find it hard to take vacations, using it was a weekend here and a weekend there or if it was a longer “vacation”, I would always have my laptop with me and find myself working on down times.

This time however, I communicated with my client to make sure they knew I was away, make sure to plan ahead…well ahead this time to get all of the work I needed to get done, done and off I go.

Now I do have my laptop with me for emergencies but since it’s my girlfriends birthday, I might not make it out alive if I work so the plan is to keep the laptop in my backpack. Fingers crossed!

So, enough of that….let’s dive into this weeks email!

Communication

Communication is a major part of our lives, whether that’s in our personal lives and relationships or our business relationships.

As an entrepreneur, communication is absolutely key and vital to success. When starting to work with someone new, whether that’s a client, team member, or boss, set the groundwork for constant communication right away.

This could include weekly meetings, daily check-ins, email chains, platforms like Notion, or recorded calls.

Always maintain consistent communication. If you make a mistake, own up to it, communicate it, and work to resolve the situation. This applies to both business and personal relationships. Always communicate, no matter what.

Further to communication, make sure you also set boundaries.personal relationships. Always communicate, no matter what. Further to communication, make sure you also set boundaries.

Habits

One of my favourite books is Atomic Habits by James Clear, and I’m currently reading The Habit Mechanic by Dr. Jon Finn. Both books emphasize starting small when building habits.

For example, if you want to run a 5K race, you don’t just start by running 5K. You build the habit gradually.

The same applies to building a business, it won’t happen overnight. You need to develop habits that improve you over time.

Take my walking habit as an example. I started in 2024 with daily walks. Initially, I tried long walks first thing in the morning but found it too hard to get up at 5 AM, so I stopped. A few months later, I started smaller, doing short walks when I got up. This began with a couple of kilometres and eventually grew to 3, 4, or 5 kilometres.

As the habit formed, I started getting up earlier, eventually waking at 5 AM to prepare for my day and starting my walks at 6 AM. I broke this habit when the weather got cooler, but now I’m preparing to build new habits for the colder months with warmer clothes and a stronger mindset to continue walking through the winter.

Consistency on Social Media

I recently spoke with a TikTok creator who was an early adopter but is now losing views and engagement.

When I asked about their content creation process, they said they made videos, published them, and moved on to the next one without a strategy to engage. They also couldn’t answer how often they posted, sometimes it was twice a day, other times 3-4 times a week with gaps in between.

If you want to grow on social media, remember social media is all about being social. Start small, like posting one video or piece of content daily or a newsletter weekly. Consistency is key.

Don’t just post and forget, engage with your target audience. Model Gary Vee’s $1.80 strategy: actively engage with your target market. This small process can lead to significant growth.
